Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates (DDS)
Description
The Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry offers an opportunity to earn the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) to qualified graduates of international dental schools while under a part-time faculty contract within the School of Dentistry.
The purpose of this program is to provide dentists educated at international dental schools an opportunity to earn a DDS degree from an accredited U.S. dental school in order to help meet the educational requirements for eligibility for licensure in all states. It is also helpful to those pursuing an academic career in dental education and research as it provides valuable teaching experience.
The Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates is individualized to meet the educational needs of the student. It consists of didactic and clinical components distributed over a twenty-seven month program. The program begins in the Summer Term of the academic year (May) and ends in August of the second year.
All components of the program must be completed at 黑料在线. Transfer students will not be considered.
*Acceptance into the Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates also depends on the educational and faculty personnel needs of the School of Dentistry, which may vary each year.
Please note: In order to be eligible to apply for the Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates, applicants must have the following credentials:
- ADA accredited post-graduate dental specialty degree or certificate from at least a two-year United States or Canadian program in clinical dentistry. Examples of acceptable programs: Orthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Pedodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Advanced Education in General Dentistry (must be at a single site), General Practice Residency (must be at a single site), Oral Medicine, Radiology
- A post-graduate specialty degree from an international dental program OR a BDS degree. Applicants with these credentials must have a minimum of one year of teaching experience at the 黑料在线 School of Dentistry.

Admission
In order to be eligible to apply for the Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates, applicants must have the following credentials:
- ADA accredited post-graduate dental specialty degree or certificate from at least a two-year United States or Canadian program in clinical dentistry
OR
- A post-graduate specialty degree from an international dental program OR a BDS degree PLUS a minimum of 1 year teaching experience at the 黑料在线 School of Dentistry
1. Each applicant is required to submit a complete formal application for admission. No application will be reviewed until it is complete. The complete application consists of the following:
- Current Curriculum Vitae
- Passport type photograph (2" x 2") (electronically uploaded)
- $75 application fee (electronic payment only)
- Official Course-by-Course Evaluation Report. This report must be prepared by World Education Services.
Note: Payment for this service is made directly to World Education Services. Please read and follow application instructions carefully. - Applicants must pass NBDE Part I and Part II at time of application. Alternatively, applicants must pass the INBDE at time of application. Official scores must be sent to Office of Admissions.
- Evidence of U.S. Immigration and Naturalization status OR meet eligibility for a student visa. The applicant must either be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident alien (Green Card), show proof that permanent residency status is in process, or meet eligibility for requirements for a student visa. TPS and OPT visas are not accepted.
- Letter of recommendation from the Dean of the overseas school is not needed, but there must be a letter from the Dean's office or the University Registrar validating that the candidate did attend and successfully completed the requirements for the DDS or BDS and successfully graduated.
- Two letters of professional reference from faculty of the candidate's accredited U.S. graduate dental specialty degree program (if applicable)
- An official transcript, posting the earned certificate or degree from an accredited U.S. graduate dental specialty degree program (if applicable)
- Applicants without a U.S. specialty degree or certificate are required to submit a TOEFL score (minimum score of 100 and 25 in each section or minimum of 5.0 in each section)

- Official WES (for international applicants) evaluation of foreign dental school transcript
- Official NBDE Part 1 & Part 2 OR INBDE results
- A letter of recommendation (LOR) from the Director of the U.S.- or Canada-based post-doctoral residency program
- Two LORs from faculty in the U.S.- or Canada-based post-doctoral residency program
- Official transcript from the U.S.- or Canada-based post-doctoral residency program
Individuals who do not meet the above-stated criteria will not be considered for an interview.

Adjunct Faculty Position
Acceptance into the Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates is based on the educational and faculty personnel needs of the School of Dentistry. Applications received by the Office of Admissions will be reviewed based on potential part-time faculty positions available for the next academic year.
If a position is available, completed applications will be forwarded to specific divisions for review. The division director is responsible for the review and selection of potential candidates. The interview process for potential candidates is coordinated by the relevant division director and the Office of Admissions.
If a division is interested in recruiting and hiring a candidate, that recommendation will be forwarded to the academic dean. The dean will make the final determination if a candidate is eligible for the Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates.
Description
- Position includes up to 24 hours per week (50% FTE) of student contact while teaching during the student pre-clinic lab, clinic, or classroom sessions in the 27-month program.
- If applicant is on an F-1 Visa, position is 20 hours per week of student contact/teaching
- Faculty are required to teach for 6 complete terms.
- Teaching and clinical assignments are determined by the division director. Faculty are expected to participate in all faculty-related activities, including faculty meetings, faculty development programs, graduation, school-sponsored social gatherings, etc.
- Annual salary is $36,000.00-$42,000 (subject to change).

Estimated Program Costs
Program Costs
The following is an estimate of program costs for an accelerated dental student based upon 2025-2026 tuition and fees. Tuition and other fees are subject to annual increases and must be paid by the first Friday of each academic term. Fees are subject to change without notice. It is anticipated that the costs of tuition and books will increase commensurate with inflation, budget needs, or similar affecting factors.
All School of Dentistry students must maintain active health insurance coverage. Accelerated DDS students are eligible for both faculty and student university health insurance plans.
