Economics (MA)
Description
The Economics graduate program offers a flexible curriculum that meets a wide range of needs, preparing graduates for the job market, applied research, and progression toward further education. Students have the opportunity to learn and apply economic principles to contemporary issues such as financial, economic, political, or social problems and opportunities that are highly relevant to the present day. Understanding these issues is crucial for informed civic engagement, critical thinking, and responsive governance. Based upon a liberal arts foundation, the degree program also provides students with a deeper knowledge and understanding of the history, institutions, and forces at work in the world economy.
The Master of Arts in Economics program prepares students for career advancement in the private sector (e.g., non-profit institutions, school systems, industry and financial institutions) as well as in diverse levels of government. Due to the explosion of complex, real-time data combined with an increasingly volatile global landscape, the demand for more advanced knowledge and abilities in the field of economics consistently increases. The degree also prepares students for managerial advancement in the rapidly emerging international sector of the economy.
Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Economics program, students will have:
- a working knowledge of how economics is woven into the fabric of institutions, industry and government
- an understanding of real-world data and the knowledge of translating raw numbers into actional business and policy strategies; and
- a greater awareness of moral and ethical issues and principles as they relate to economic concepts, theories and realities.
Students in the Master of Arts in Economics program must choose a concentration to fit with their career goals. There are two options available – General Economics and Financial Economics. The curriculum of the two concentrations is listed under degree requirements.

Admission Requirements
In order to be admitted to the Master of Arts in Economics program, an applicant must meet entrance requirements of Detroit Mercy. The applicant must also have completed a baccalaureate or advanced degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
