Undergraduate Catalog 2023-2024

Health Services Administration (BS)

Program Description

The Health Services Administration (HSA) program is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level supervisory training positions in organizations, institutions, and agencies that deliver health services. This is accomplished by providing a strong theoretical foundation in management linked with application to the health care system. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration.

The HSA program consists of the following components: (1) Detroit Mercy Core Curriculum (2) the Health Services Administration major requirements: 43 credit hours of major courses, 15 credit hours in an area of professional specialization, and nine credit hours of supportive courses (3) Electives: students may also need to take several electives to satisfy and reach the minimum graduation credit hour requirement of 120.

A three credit internship in a health care setting is included in the HSA curriculum. The internship allows students to apply the theory and skills learned in the program and provides an opportunity to explore potential employment opportunities.

The Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration degree is offered in a variety of formats that include classes online and in the evenings to meet the needs of adults living and working in the metropolitan area. Students are expected to complete their degree within 10 years. Health Services Administration courses that are more than 10 years old must be repeated.
